The local police chief, Cecil Tolliver, quickly realizes the mistake after his officers mistakenly open fire on Andrew. Afraid of the bad publicity—especially during an election year—the Chief hatches a desperate plan to cover up the blunder. He recruits a small-time criminal named Amos Odell from the local jail and strikes a deal: Amos will "break into" the house and pretend to take Andrew hostage, allowing the police to "rescue" the author and look like heroes.

Andrew Sterling, a wealthy, Pulitzer Prize-winning Black author, moves into a luxury vacation home in a predominantly white island community in New England.
