The unique structure of Season 4 was born out of necessity rather than pure artistic whim. Following the show’s long hiatus, the main cast had become major stars with conflicting schedules, making it nearly impossible to film them together in the same room. Showrunner Mitch Hurwitz responded by designing 15 variable-length episodes that each focused on a single family member.

This "deconstructed" approach allowed for a "puzzle-box" narrative. Events were shown from multiple perspectives across different episodes; a background gag in episode two might not find its punchline or explanation until episode twelve. For instance, a viewer might see Michael driving past a Segway in his episode, only to watch Gob’s episode later and discover exactly where he was going and why.
