As a general rule, the base spread should be roughly 1/2 to 2/3 the size of the tabletop.

The most critical factor is stability. A base that is too small for its tabletop can lead to dangerous tipping or wobbling.

If your top is made of stone, heavy wood, or thick glass, you need a larger, sturdier base (closer to 2/3 of the top's size) to handle the extra weight.
