The LGBTQ+ movement was born from the activism of those who were marginalized, frequently including transgender women of color who were pivotal in early rights movements. Despite this, as mainstream lesbian and gay rights movements prioritized legislative wins, they often left behind the most marginalized, including trans people and people of color. This created a "gap" where, historically, trans people have had to advocate for themselves in the face of both outside hostility and, at times, exclusion from within the wider queer community. The intersection of the transgender community and broader LGBTQ+ culture is a complex, evolving landscape defined by intense resilience, a struggle for inclusive recognition, and a profound reconfiguration of gender and identity. While sharing a history of marginalization, the relationship between "LGB" and "T" has often been fraught, moving from a shared battle for survival toward a current, often tense, negotiation of priorities.
