The story of (2021) follows Cole Young ( Lewis Tan ), a washed-up MMA fighter unaware that the dragon-shaped birthmark on his chest is a "mark of the chosen," signifying his role as a defender of Earthrealm . Cole is soon hunted by Sub-Zero ( Joe Taslim ), a cryomancer sent by the sorcerer Shang Tsung ( Chin Han ) to eliminate Earth's champions before the next tournament can even begin.
Guided by Special Forces Major (Mehcad Brooks), Cole finds sanctuary at the temple of the thunder god Raiden ( Tadanobu Asano ).
