Aleksey Konstantinovich Tolstoy’s 1839 gothic horror novella The Family of the Vourdalak ( Semia Vurdalaka ) is a seminal work of vampire fiction that predates Dracula by decades, focusing on a Serbian family haunted by a patriarch who turns into a vampire. The narrative follows a French diplomat, the Marquis d'Urfé, who becomes entangled in the family's tragic fate after a warning from the patriarch, Gorcha, is ignored.
